A playground not only provides children with endless hours of free play and exercise, it also ties a community together by serving as a common space for families to gather. In a relaxed setting, residents and visitors connect and new friendships form. These are the building blocks to a strong community.

 

The Hanalei Playground Project

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Objective

The Hanalei Initiative (HI) is working with the Hanalei-to-Haena Community Association, the County of Kauai and our Community Design Committee to build the first public playground in Hanalei in over 30 years. We believe it is important to utilize colors and equipment that support Hanalei’s rural environment. Functionality must maximize space and support as many children as possible.


Project Outline

The County has agreed to install the rubber surface and HI will procure and install the playground equipment.

  • Site- Next to Hanalei Neighborhood Center (Old Courthouse)

  • Design- Working with a community led design committee- Caron Daimond, Koral McCarthy, Lahela Chandler Correa, Dennis Ham Young, Annie Sheehan, Mahina Laughlin, Cola Lindman, Carl Imperato, Nanea Marston.

  • Funding- October of 2018 HI raised $94k from many small local donors.

  • Schedule- Base Yard improvment ground breaking August 2021. Playground installation will be the last phase of the project scheduled for Q1 2023

This public-private partnership is much more than playground equipment.
