Hanalei
Pavilion
The Hanalei Pavilion has undergone a transformative renovation aimed at creating a more inviting and family-friendly environment for our community. This project reflects the collective efforts of local residents and organizations dedicated to enhancing safety, accessibility, and community engagement within the park.
In 2022, The Hanalei Initiative successfully remodeled the Hanalei Pavilion with the goal of creating a more family-friendly environment for the community. This renovation was essential, as the pavilion had become a haven for illegal activities, which deterred local residents and visitors from using the mauka portion of the park. By transforming the pavilion into an inviting space, we aimed to enhance safety and foster community engagement. The scope of work was completed by the end of summer, and while painting the bathrooms was not initially included, the stark contrast between the newly renovated pavilion and the bathrooms made the project appear unfinished. We decided to paint the bathrooms as well, ensuring a cohesive look throughout the facility.

The project stemmed from a strong desire within the community to revitalize the pavilion. In October 2017, residents met with County representatives, including then-Parks & Recreation Director Lenny Rapozo, to express their overwhelming support for the renovation. The Hanalei to Haena Community Association (HHCA) facilitated further discussions, prioritizing the pavilion’s redesign in their 2020 agenda. The Hanalei Initiative took a proactive role in this project, consulting with architects and engineers to explore an open design that would improve accessibility and safety. Partnering with the County allowed us to manage the renovation plans, secure building permits, and oversee construction while the County upgraded the wastewater system.

Kanoa Chung, D.Arch of Noho Workshop, played a key role in the design process. A local from Kilauea, Kanoa shared our vision for diversifying Kauai’s economic base by mentoring north shore youth in various career paths. Through our Hanalei Initiative Creative Center, Kanoa developed workshops on architecture and design, providing participants with valuable skills in design and drafting. This collaboration was instrumental in assessing and documenting the pavilion’s needs. We are thrilled with the outcome of the renovation and look forward to seeing it serve the community for years to come.
