Hanalei Playground

A playground offers children endless opportunities for free play and exercise, but its impact extends beyond recreation. It serves as a vital gathering space for families, fostering connections among residents and visitors alike. In this welcoming environment, friendships blossom, laying the foundation for a vibrant and cohesive community.

The Hanalei Initiative, in collaboration with the Hanalei-to-Haena Community Association and the County of Kauai, has successfully brought to life the first public playground in Hanalei in over 30 years. This project not only aims to provide a vibrant space for children to play and exercise but also serves as a vital community hub where families can gather. With a design that reflects Hanalei’s unique environment, the playground features colors and equipment chosen to harmonize with the natural surroundings while maximizing functionality for as many children as possible.

Funded through the generosity of the community, we were able to raise the $94,000 needed from numerous local donors to complete the new Hanalei Playground. The playground's design was shaped by a dedicated community-led committee, ensuring that the voices of local residents were heard throughout the process. With the support of the County, who agreed to install the rubber surface, the Hanalei Initiative procured and installed the playground equipment. Groundbreaking for the base yard improvements took place in August 2021, and after careful planning and collaboration, the playground officially opened to the public in 2023, offering a new recreational space for residents and visitors alike.
